I had decided to write a formal essay since this was a strong research heavy paper so enjoy!!! The Dominican musical culture is a rich and vibrant tapestry of various musical genres that have developed over centuries of cultural exchange and fusion. The Dominican Republic is a small island nation located in the Caribbean Sea, and its music is an amalgamation of indigenous, African, and European influences. The TaĆno people, who lived on the island before Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492, had a rich musical tradition that included various instruments such as maracas, drums, and flutes. The arrival of the Spanish colonizers brought with them European musical influences, such as the guitar and the accordion. The introduction of African slaves to the island in the 16th century also had a significant impact on Dominican musical culture. African slaves brought with them a rich tradition of drumming, which remains an integral part of many Dominican musical genres today. One of the most po...

Music and Family

The person I decided to interview was my dad and I thought the question that was on canvas were good questions to allow me and my dad not only discover her past but also has a connection as well.   What is your first memory of music? His first experience is when my grandpa was in a band and practice and that's where he learned how to play the drums with a group of his friends as well from his elementary  school. How did music impact your childhood? Being engaged with his father music group made in want to engage more with music and his neighbor played drums which he spent his free time indulging in the art every chance he had a opportunity. How did music impact the culture and society around you when you were growing up? As they were older on the weekend, they would set up gatherings in their backyard and around the city dancing having a great time while also focusing on playing music and trying to get notice. What did your parents think of the music you listened to as a ...

M y first big blog the genre of music that I chose will be talking about is the Hip Hop/Rap industry. Hip Hop was created back in the 1970s born in New York by Bronx. It was organically influenced by African American dancing and was becoming very popular all over the United States. Hip hop definition from the US is that its "a style of popular music of US black and Hispanic origin, featuring rap with an electronic backing". Nowadays hip-hop has another name called rap and now hip hop has a lot more aggressive words being said like violence, sex, drugs, and profanity. But this is the point of hip hop, it is supposed to make you feel cool and confident with the energy and adrenaline rush of pure aggression or resilience. The style rap is used in is very unique I think it's just a young adult's type of music, I'm sure everyone likes hip hop because it's just naturally in our blood from our ancestors growing and being so engaged in the music since I can remember....

Music and Gender

Most of the music that I was brought up upon was gospel, r and b music, and rap. Majority of the music I listen to is rap; subconsciously doing this activity made me begun to realize that most of the music industry in America is surrounded bye the voices of males. Research shows that in all music categories including dance, country and also pop has a significant difference between the gender ratio. When I was younger and still to this day when I decide to turn on R and B music majority of it comes from female artist so coming into this assignment I thought that the percentage would be closer than rap since the content is mainly violent. However, it says that pop music has the highest percentage of successful female artist at 32 percent with dance following behind it at 21.5 percent. This disadvantage automatically makes it challenging for female artist to become successful in a male dominant career. Throughout this research it shows from the last decade that under 13 percent of female ...

Music and Rituals

I have been to many gatherings and important events such as  "fun"erals, graduations, sporting events, church,  and birthday's; while taking your class help me understand that every song has its own occasion/purpose. In my family we usually play sad songs in the church after viewing the body it feels sad obviously but gives us a sense of comfort as well it almost feels like a imaginary hug. So the music is correlating with the event but contradicting as well which I found is intriguing this moment is almost bitter-sweet. Usually after the funeral and everything is said and done we all meet up at a family's residents and play only happy music there and reminisce. As far as I know majority of high schools/University's have their own alma mater song which is very therapeutic and give a sense of calmness and achievement as the trail and tribulations someone has overcome and conquered. Sporting events songs/chants depends on the team so it is very diverse and multiple...

Music and me

Hey, my name is DreQuan Guyton. I was born and raised in Gaffney SC but I lived majority of my teenaged years in Spartanburg and graduated from Broome high school. Ummm... I would consider myself the middle child I have two older sisters and one younger brother. I've always been a competitive person and played football from 3rd grade through my sophomore year of high school, wrestled and ran track from my freshman through senior year of high school. When I started running, I began to build an unbreakable relationship with my coach, so I joined the cross-country team my 11th grade year which was a big culture shock for me. The times that I was running seemed to be good enough for me to run in college so here I am now! Now my goal is to graduate Converse and get a degree in Business Management. 1. Most recent music I have a active passion in learning Spanish and become fluent so my favorite category is romance/ R&B. Listening to this music majority of the time will get me use to...
