Music and Gender

Most of the music that I was brought up upon was gospel, r and b music, and rap. Majority of the music I listen to is rap; subconsciously doing this activity made me begun to realize that most of the music industry in America is surrounded bye the voices of males. Research shows that in all music categories including dance, country and also pop has a significant difference between the gender ratio. When I was younger and still to this day when I decide to turn on R and B music majority of it comes from female artist so coming into this assignment I thought that the percentage would be closer than rap since the content is mainly violent. However, it says that pop music has the highest percentage of successful female artist at 32 percent with dance following behind it at 21.5 percent. This disadvantage automatically makes it challenging for female artist to become successful in a male dominant career. Throughout this research it shows from the last decade that under 13 percent of female artist has made the top 100 billboards. This shows how engraved most American listeners today of both gender subconsciously prefer to listen to males voices or style of writing than females. Personally I have a preference of when I want to listen to aggressive music I lean towards masculine music and when I want to express my emotions or feminine energy I will choose someone such as Alecia Keys. I like her because most female artist stick to a certain category but she's a bit more versatile and can go from hip hop to r and b. She has some few hit songs and both of these categories which is Empire state of mind ft Jay z, and Girl on Fire. Because of this significant difference between males and females' songs it shows that record labels are paying the males more in the industry as well. With reports shown Taylor Swift being the highest paid song writer in 2019 but after her there are several males behind her before it gets to the next female.

  1. I love R and B, and Alicia Keys is one of my favorites. I agree; rap is majority male artists, along with a few female ones. I found it interesting but very true that there were more successful females in the pop world.

  2. I grew up listening to old R&B with my parents and I love it. I will agree that when times are needed to touch the soul I will lean more towards female artists such as Alicia Keys or SZA because of their soothing voices. I also found it interesting that only 13% of female artists has made the top 100 billboard in the last decade.

  3. I love Alicia Keys! There is a lot of surprising facts within this blog! And I agree with on the preference of music I listen to depends on what I want to get out of the music! When I am getting ready on a gameday I typically listen to rap or pump up music that is preformed by men and when I am in my feels or having a good day I typically listen to female artist like Taylor Swift!

  5. I'm the same way where I grew up on gospel music but now I listen to rap. The statistics really do show how much harder it is for a woman to make it in the music industry overall. They have so much talent that can be explored.
