Music and Family

The person I decided to interview was my dad and I thought the question that was on canvas were good questions to allow me and my dad not only discover her past but also has a connection as well.

What is your first memory of music? His first experience is when my grandpa was in a band and practice and that's where he learned how to play the drums with a group of his friends as well from his elementary school.

How did music impact your childhood? Being engaged with his father music group made in want to engage more with music and his neighbor played drums which he spent his free time indulging in the art every chance he had a opportunity.

How did music impact the culture and society around you when you were growing up? As they were older on the weekend, they would set up gatherings in their backyard and around the city dancing having a great time while also focusing on playing music and trying to get notice.

What did your parents think of the music you listened to as a kid? The didn't like it because he decided to branch off from soul music which he was surrounded by from the beginning and then into hip hop and hardcore rap with pure violence, drugs, and profanity.

Were you involved in anything like band or choir in school? Yes, as he stated earlier from his very first connection with music.

Did you play an instrument or take lessons? Yes, the drums What was that like? To go more in deeper detail, he said that playing in the band gave him a closer connection with his dad although he enjoyed the instrument the connection with his pops made it much more significant.

If you went to a church, what was the music like, and how did you feel about it? The music in a ordinary black Baptist church is usually loud, but the loud music also gave him a better connection with the divine and adding my input as well till this day in our church he states that nothing hasn't really changed in the church culture. But I'd say at the beginning it's a little disturbing for me at the beginning, but I eventually settle in and start feeling the connection as well.

Was there any style or genre of music that was off-limits when you were a kid? Rap and hip hop

Did your parents influence what kind of music you listened to? Soul music Did they push you to take lessons or play an instrument?  No he said that his love for music was so pure that his parents seen the vision and just continued to encourage he love for music by stepping in his father steps.

What sort of technology did you use to listen to your music? He had boombox and walk man which obviously well all know that it was not used with any internet How has that changed over the years? No with the use of internet and Bluetooth we can listen to music anywhere without any interruptions. But the struggles they had to go through were vcr and dvds getting messed up and some songs could not be revived.

  1. This was an interesting blog to read. Both your dad's and my mom's parents did not like the music they listened to, and for the same reasons, which I thought was cool, in addition to the fact they have both expressed frustration with how the tapes and DVDs would get messed up and could interrupt their music. I thought it was great how music brought your dad and his dad closer.
